-ing ወይስ to? (gerunds and infinitives)
አንድ ግሥ ሌላ ግሥ ሲከተል፣ ሁለተኛው ወይ -ing (enjoy cooking) ወይ to + ግሥ (want to cook) ይሆናል። አንዳንድ ግሦች ሁለቱንም ይወስዳሉ፣ ትርጉሙ ግን ይለወጣል፤ ከመስተዋድድ በኋላ ደግሞ ሁልጊዜ -ing ነው።
ግሥ + -ing እና ግሥ + to
አማርኛ ለሁለቱም አንድ ቅርጽ ይጠቀማል፦ መሥራት እፈልጋለሁ (I want to work)፣ መሥራት እወዳለሁ (I like working)። ስለዚህ አማርኛ ተናጋሪዎች ብዙ ጊዜ ይገምታሉ። በእንግሊዝኛ የሚወስነው የመጀመሪያው ግሥ ነው። ሙሉ ደንብ የለም፤ ስለዚህ የተለመዱትን ግሦች በሁለት ዝርዝር ይማሩ። አንዳንድ ግሦች ከ to በፊት ሰው ይወስዳሉ፦ I want you to come፣ she asked me to wait።

- like, love, hate, start, begin እና continue ሁለቱንም ይወስዳሉ፣ ትርጉሙ አይለወጥም ማለት ይቻላል፦ I like cooking / I like to cook።
- help ያለ to ም ይሆናል፦ Can you help me carry this?
- I enjoy walking in the park after work.
- We can't afford to buy a house yet.
- My manager asked me to work on Saturday.

ሁለቱም ቅርጾች፣ የተለያየ ትርጉም
ጥቂት ግሦች ትርጉማቸው ይለወጣል። stop + -ing ማለት መተው ነው፤ stop + to ማለት ሌላ ነገር ለመሥራት መቆም ነው። remember / forget + -ing ወደ ኋላ፣ ወደ ትዝታ ይመለከታሉ፤ remember / forget + to ወደፊት መሠራት ያለበትን ሥራ ይመለከታሉ። try + -ing ሙከራ ነው፤ try + to ደግሞ አስቸጋሪ ጥረት ነው።

- የያለፈ ትዝታ → -ing። ለወደፊት የሚሠራ ሥራ → to።
- try -ing፦ ሠርተው ይረዳ እንደሆነ ይዩ። try to፦ ጥረት ያድርጉ።
- He stopped drinking soda, and he feels better.
- On the way home, we stopped to get gas.

ከመስተዋድድ በኋላ፣ እንደ ባለቤት፣ እና ለዓላማ
ከመስተዋድድ በኋላ (in, on, at, of, for, about, before, after, without, instead of) ግሡ ሁልጊዜ -ing ነው። to መስተዋድድ ሲሆን ይጠንቀቁ፦ look forward to seeing፣ be used to working። የ -ing ቅርጽ የዓረፍተ ነገር ባለቤትም ሊሆን ይችላል፦ Smoking is not allowed። አንድን ነገር ለምን እንደሚሠሩ ለመናገር to + ግሥ ይጠቀሙ እንጂ for + ግሥ አይደለም፦ I came here to work።

- መስተዋድድ + -ing፣ ሁልጊዜ፦ tired of waiting, afraid of driving።
- to ን ይፈትኑ፦ ከኋላው ስም መግባት ከቻለ (I look forward to the weekend) መስተዋድድ ነው፤ ስለዚህ -ing ይጠቀሙ።
- ዓላማ፦ to + ግሥ፣ ወይም for + ስም፦ I went out to buy milk / for milk።
- Thank you for calling the clinic.
- I'm thinking about going back to school.
- Speaking English every day is the best practice.
- She works two jobs to support her family.
