Ethiopian embassy services, from here
Renewing an Ethiopian passport, the Origin ID (yellow card), a power of attorney for something back home, getting a US paper accepted in Ethiopia, and taking a loved one home for burial — what the embassy needs, step by step, from Las Vegas or Atlanta.
Everything here was read from the embassy's and the Ethiopian government's own pages on the date shown. Fees change and pages move: call the line given before you pay or post anything. Sefer is not the embassy and cannot file for you.
When someone dies
The embassy's letter is free and the form is online. The funeral home handles the airline.
Taking a loved one home for burial
The family of someone who has died here and will be buried in Ethiopia. The embassy issues the letter the airline needs; the service is free. The funeral home does the rest.
What you need
- The death certificate.
- A health certificate that the body is free of contagious disease.
- A letter from the funeral home that the body is prepared for transport.
- The passport of the person who died. If there is none, or it does not show Ethiopia as the birthplace, a letter from Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs permitting entry is needed first.
How it goes
- Choose a funeral home that has shipped to Ethiopia before; ask your church or mosque who the community uses. The funeral home prepares the body to Ethiopian Airlines' rules and books the flight.
- Fill in the embassy's online form and upload the four documents. The embassy reviews it and emails the letter.
- Print the letter in colour and give it to the funeral home for the shipment.
- Post a notice on Sefer under Desta-Hazen if you want the community told; the Faith page lists places that hold a service.
- The fee
- The embassy's letter is free. The funeral home and the airline charge their own fees; ask for the full price in writing before you sign.
