Ethiopian embassy services, from here

Renewing an Ethiopian passport, the Origin ID (yellow card), a power of attorney for something back home, getting a US paper accepted in Ethiopia, and taking a loved one home for burial — what the embassy needs, step by step, from Las Vegas or Atlanta.

Everything here was read from the embassy's and the Ethiopian government's own pages on the date shown. Fees change and pages move: call the line given before you pay or post anything. Sefer is not the embassy and cannot file for you.

Passport

Renewal is through an app or in person in Washington. A lost passport starts with a police report.

Renew an Ethiopian passport

Ethiopian citizens whose passport has expired or is about to.

Renewal is only for passports issued under the EPRDF-era system; older passports and special cases go through verification first. Applications with photos or scans that do not meet the app's rules are delayed or rejected.

What you need

  • Your current (expired) Ethiopian passport, and a scan of it under 2.5 MB for the app.
  • One recent passport-size photo (under 2.5 MB in the app).
  • A debit or credit card for the app, or a money order if you go in person.

How it goes

  1. Download Digital Invea (App Store or Google Play), create an account, choose passport renewal and follow the steps; pay by card in the app.
  2. Or go to the embassy in Washington in person with the expired passport, one photo and a money order.
  3. The embassy's notice lists no mail-in option for renewals; call the passport line before posting anything.
The fee
Not published on the embassy's page; paid by card in the app or by money order at the embassy. Ask on the passport line.

Replace a lost or stolen passport

Ethiopian citizens whose passport is gone.

What you need

  • A police report for the loss or theft.
  • A copy of the lost passport if you have one; otherwise the passport number if you know it.
  • The replacement fee as a money order. The embassy may ask for more documents depending on the case.

How it goes

  1. Report the loss to the police first and keep the report number.
  2. Call the passport line to confirm what your case needs before you send or bring anything.
  3. If you must travel to Ethiopia before a passport can be issued, ask the same line about a laissez-passer (a one-journey travel document).
The fee
A replacement fee by money order; the amount is not on the embassy's page.
